Dubbed “The original candy wafer,” NECCO first started making candy wafers in 1847 and the official NECCO Wafers brand has been available since the early 1900s (when they sold for as little as 5 cents a roll). Today, this nostalgic candy is still one of the most affordable on the market, with a roll of 38 to 40 candy wafers costing less than a buck.
Some historic points that you might not know about NECCO Wafers include:
- 1913 – NECCO Wafers were taken on an Arctic expedition by explorer Donald MacMillan as a source of nutrition for his team and as treats for Native American children.
- World War II – NECCO Wafers were commissioned by the American government as treats for soldiers and were prized for their durability when shipping overseas.
The NECCO Wafer is a fat free candy that comes in eight flavors and colors: orange (orange), chocolate (brown), lemon (yellow), lime (green), clove (purple), wintergreen (pink), cinnamon (white) and licorice (black). The chocolate-flavored wafers are also available in their own packaging.
